82: All I Wanna Do (Strike!) (1998) with the We Really Like Her podcast
This week, the hilarious and insightful women of the What about Meryl podcast and the upcoming, We Really Like Her podcast, take us back to the roots of third wave feminism with the phenomenal All I wanna do, also known as, Strike!, also known as The Hairy Bird. Made in the 90's, and featuring all your favorite female teen leads from the era, it's remarkably ahead of its time. Not only in its advanced portrayal of complex female relationships bolstered by general silliness and frank discussions of sex, but also in the backstory of how it was nearly destroyed by the Weinsteins and how differently it was marketed in each country.
It's the 20th anniversary this year of the film's release, and Danita Steinberg, Emily Gagne, Becky and Cam, revisit why these films meant so much to us as young people, what happened to the genre of female-led teen comedies, the importance of having a language to address and discuss serious issues, and the genius of Sarah Kernochan.
Whatever name it's released under, you should be able to find it streaming on iTunes, Google Play or at your local video rental store. Sleep over!
This week's end credit music is The Hairy Bird performed by The Fingernails and written by Sarah Kernochan.
